Whitney Elizabeth Houston was born to a musically inclined family on 9 August 1963, in Newark New Jersey the daughter of gospel singer Cissy Houston (nee Emily Lee Drinkard) and John Russell Houston Jr. and cousin of singing star Dionne Warwick. In Newark Whitney started singing with the church choir when she was a young child. When she was 15 years old, she joined her mom in backing vocals in Chaka's hit Im Every Woman from 1978.
